What is a Mouth Guard?

A mouth or dental guard is precisley what it sounds like an oral appliance that’s worn to prevent teeth and tissue damage. The material cushions your smile and absorbs internal and external impacts which could otherwise lead to injuries. Noted below are some of the many things that a mouth guard can help you avoid:

  • Tooth fragmentation, like chips or cracks
  • Lacerations to your lips, cheeks, or tongue
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Broken dental restorations like fillings and crowns
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Concussion prevention

This appliance is not limited to professional or amateur athletes. Patients with bruxism (nighttime tooth grinding and clenching) or who have braces are also advised to obtain a dental guard.

At our local clinic, our dentist in Kelowna can help you navigate this process with ease. Dr. Degner will assess your smile and discuss your preferences and needs with you during a one-on-one consultation to ensure your satisfaction. Be sure to let us know if you have questions.

Types of Mouth Guards

Patients can get three types of mouth guards:

    • Stock: This is the most affordable type of device, but it also provides the least amount of protection. They are one-size-fits-all and don’t last very long. You can purchase them at sports or drug stores
    • Boil-and-Bite: A boil-and-bite guard is another dental guard available at drugstores. It offers a bit more protection than a stock one, but not as much as a custom guard. In order to shape the plastic to your smile, you must soften the guard in hot water first, then, once cool, bite down to form an impression.
    • Custom: Dentists everywhere, including our own Dr. Degner, advise purchasing a custom-made dental guard. This can only be obtained by visiting a dentist and having them create exact impressions of your mouth. Here at Love It Dental, we digitally scan your oral cavity instead, eliminating the messiness of physical moulds. The actual guard is made at a dental lab using medical-grade plastic that is sturdy yet comfortable.
